Christmas Safety Tips for your Pets!

Christmas is almost here, which means lots of food, shopping and family festivities. The holidays can be fun but yet stressful for not only you but your pets. That is why Kingsmark Kennels would like to take a moment to make sure you and your pets have a safe holiday!

  1. If you plan on having a Christmas tree, there are a few things you should remember.
    • Tinsel should be avoided because your dog may think it is a toy. They could accidently swallow and choke on the tiny strings.Do not decorate your tree in popcorn or other food items.
    • Do not decorate your tree in popcorn or other food items.
    • Remove all edible gifts from under the tree.
    • Hang small breakable ornaments out of your pets reach.
    • Do not place chemicals in your trees water.
    • Do not let your pet drink the tree’s water because many pine needles fall in the stand.
  2. Electric Window Displays
    • Make sure all your electrical connections and outlets are secured and concealed.
    • Tape electrical cords to the walls or floors to ensure that your pet will not chew on them
  3. Hanging edible treats
    • Avoid hanging edible treats such as stockings filled with candies, goodies and chocolates in dangerous places like a fire place or Christmas tree.
  4. Holiday Plants
    • Poinsettias, Amaryllis, Mistletoe, and holly are very poisonous!
    • If your pets eat these plants they may cause diarrhea, vomiting or much more serious problems.
  5. Safe place for your pets to rest
    • Before the festivities begin make sure all your pets have a quiet, safe place to relax.
    • If your pets enjoy having company, just make sure they don’t become too overwhelmed.
  6. Leftovers
    • Throw away all the bones!
    • Certain bones may splinter and cause damage to your pets throat and intestines.
    • Small bones also become lodged in your pet’s throat and may cause distress.
  7. Watch what you feed your pets during the holidays
    • Avoid chocolate, candy and cookies, which can be toxic to their health.
    • Do not feed your pets high fat foods, such as gravy and dressing because it can cause serious upset tummies.
    • Let your guests know not to feed your pets
  8. After you open your presents
    • Quickly dispose of all plastic wrappings, ribbons and bows because they can be easily swallowed by curious pets
  9. I.D. Your pets
    • PLEASE make sure all your pets have proper identification
    • If one of your pets slips out the door during your celebration. It will be much easier to find them if they have tags on.

Kingsmark Kennels hopes you and your pets have a safe and Merry Christmas!
